A Simple Way to Understand Who You Truly Are When You Feel Like You Lost Yourself
Do you ever feel like you've lost who you are, or you're not sure who you are anymore?
Whether it's from letting your day to day activities overwhelm you, the demands of motherhood and your career, feeling like you have to show up as this perfect superwoman who does everything for everyone else and rarely has time just for herself?
I have felt this so much, and I feel that who I am is always evolving. And I'm always seeking for a deeper understanding of who I am, and how I can show up as her in my life more authentically.
I have a simple exercise for you to reconnect to who you are, and how you can embody her more. I always come back to this exercise whenever I feel disconnected from who I am.
Are you ready?
Close your eyes, and imagine yourself as a child. Choose the age that comes up intuitively, maybe it's 7, maybe it's 10, or even older.
As you see her in your mind, remember what it was like to be her.
Who was she?
What was her personality like?
What was she passionate about?
What did she enjoy doing, or pretending to be?
How did she show up?
What made her happy?
As you answer these questions for yourself, grab your journal and write them down.
And then as you look at this list, see what feels connected to who you are in this moment, and how it shows up in your life, or is longing to show up?
I'll bet that what you saw and wrote down is still true to the essence of who you are today. And if it feels true, but it's something you don't allow yourself to express, maybe it's an invitation to come back to this part of yourself.
When I think back to my 7 year old self, she loved to be creative and artistic. She was always daydreaming, drawing, and writing. She loved playing dress up and playing with makeup. She loved listening to music, and she loved reading stories. She loved being around animals, playing with her friends, and even playing by herself. She loved being in nature and having adventures, and dreamed of traveling to far off places. She loved being in charge when it came to playing games with her friends or siblings.
When I think of myself now, and how this connects, I see that I am still an artist and creative at heart, and this is a big value of mine. I am a visionary and can see clearly what I want, and the path to get it. I see that I love expression with clothes and makeup and accessories. I value my alone time and enjoy being by myself, and I love to be in community with other women and have deep conversations with a few rather than huge groups.
I feel grounded being outside, and feel the need to spend more time in nature. I love traveling and seeing new places and having new experiences, and want to make this more of a priority in my life. I want to step more into my leadership in my business and in the world, and know that the work I do has a big impact on the lives of others.
I believe that who we are at the core, is who we have always been.
It felt more natural to express ourselves when we younger, and as we've grown up, and had traumas, different life experiences, and expectations put on us by families or by society, we've gotten away from who we truly are. We've put different masks on to fit in, to survive, or to just get by.
We think we lost who we were, but she's still there waiting for us to rediscover her, and welcome her back. And if we ever feel like we don't know who she is or what she wants, we just have to think back and the answers are right there waiting for us.
Understanding who you are, and connecting to her is a big part of the work I do with my private coaching clients.
